Exceptional Rappers in the K-Pop Industry (1): BTS SUGA

Ever heard of the 3-in-1 identity idol rapper? Right there is Suga!

Suga is one of the most popular, powerful, and talented rappers in the K-pop industry. As a member of the global group BTS, he works as a songwriter and producer. Suga has a quite deep voice, fast rapping skills, and emotional lyrics.

The singer and rapper was born on March 9, 1993, with the name Min Yoon Gi, in Daegu. His music writing skill started when he was a teenager. He worked as an underground rapper with the stage name “Gloss” before he debuted with BTS in 2013 with the stage name “Suga.”

Years after his debut, he released his first solo music with the stage name “Agust D,” which he derived from his name being spelled backwards and DT signifying his hometown, Daegu Town, and still uses the name to date. Suga writes and produces many BTS and other artists’ songs. He is known for being honest in his lyrics, often talking about mental health, dreams, pain, and success.

He has two mixtapes: “Agust D” (2016) and “D-DAY” (2020), which are both full of his raw emotions, fast rap lines, and his side as a singer. Songs like “Daechwita,” “Agust D,” and “The Last” showed his smooth skills and honesty. In “The Last,” he opened up about his battle with depression and anxiety, talked about his dislocated shoulder due to an accident he had when making deliveries, and some other struggles he had gone through, touching many fans. The title track for the “D-DAY” album, “Haegeum,” mixes traditional Korean music with hip-hop, showing his unique style of infusing culture into modern rap.

Suga is not only a fast rapper, but he also writes his lyrics deeply and full of meaning. He writes about real issues, including his personal struggles, like when he said, “I’m standing at the edge of a cliff. I’m afraid, but I keep going forward,” and “Sometimes, I feel like I’m a genius / Sometimes, I feel like I have no talent,” to show his bravery despite the challenges. He also gives hope in his lyrics, e.g., “I hope you don’t forget that giving up decisively also counts as courage,” in his song “Burn It.”

Away from all these, he also has the raw sides that don’t hesitate to dish out his thoughts through dissing. Tracks like “Haegeum,” “Daechwita,” and “Agust D” are pure diss tracks aimed at people who have looked down upon them when they were growing up and those who have continued to throw several jabs at him and his group members. He’s never afraid to say his mind. He writes his lyrics in a genius way that makes people understand his words but remain unable to put him into a lawsuit situation or any sort of trouble.

He also produced the reimagined version of Samsung’s iconic theme song, “Over the Horizon.”

Unlike his intense songs, he’s known as the quiet member of BTS. Although introverted, he’s often referred to as kind and thoughtful by his members. In his free time, he enjoys sleeping, shopping for music gadgets, and playing basketball. He also spoke openly about seeing a therapist and taking care of his mental health in his interview, saying, “It’s okay to be sad and weak. Everyone has pain.” Fans have claimed these words make them feel loved and seen because they can relate to them.
